Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set with up to four categories. Solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems using information presented in a bar graph.

Topic: Represent & Interpret Data

Objective: students will be able to sort data into categories, represent data on a bar graph, and interpret the results.

Educational Technology Teacher Tools:
Voki: Introduction
Padlet: collecting and categorizing data
Screencast-o-matic: bar graph tutorials

Lesson Plan:

In this lesson students will learn how to represent data using bar graphs, and how to interpret data/ information contained in the bar graphs. Students will collect and categorize data using Padlet, which they will then represent using bar graphs using KidsZone.com. Students will then discuss/ interpret data, noticing similarities and differences, and implications.

1. Teacher will use Voki to introduce the topic of the lesson and student learning objectives.
2. Teacher will discuss the purpose of bar graphs as visual representations of data that makes it easier for interpretation. 3. Teacher will use screencast to explain bar graph components and functions.
4. Teacher will present students with the scenario of organizing a classroom ice cream party. Students' job is to find out what are their favorite ice cream flavors, and how much of which flavor to buy.
5. Students will type the names of their favorite ice creams using Padlet, and then organize it into categories.
6. Teacher then will use screencast to demonstrate how to plug in the information into a bar graph using KidsZone.com.
7. Teacher will model interpreting data from favorite ice cream flavors - compare the number of votes; and then using that data in making decisions - how much of what ice cream to purchase for a classroom party.
8. Students will practice creating their bar graphs using KidsZone.com.
